In Write Like a Mother, Sara Fredman’s new online publication for writers who are also parents, the St. Louis-based medievalist provides a much needed resource for thinking about what she aptly describes as “doing a hard thing when you’re already doing a hard thing.” Sara’s most recent conversation is with the inimitable Irina Dumitrescu. It’s a great conversation that touches on so many unmentionable aspects of academic life. In addition to the difficult balance between writing and parenting, they discuss the appeals of lucid prose, public writing as an academic, and ways to escape the professional mindset that (over)values constant work. During a time when work and parenting are squeezing the fun out of life for many people, their conversation is a wonderful tonic.
